Poland is a country located in Central Europe, bordered by Germany to the west; the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the south; Ukraine and Belarus to the east; and the Baltic Sea to the north. The total area of Poland is approximately 312,700 square kilometers (about 120,700 sq mi). With a population of over 38 million people, Poland is a member of the European Union and the Schengen Area.
Poland is a unitary parliamentary republic. According to available indices, it ranks among the more peaceful countries in Europe.
The President, elected by popular vote every five years, is the head of state. The Prime Minister, appointed on the basis of parliamentary majority, heads the government - the parliamentary term lasts up to four years.
Since 1999 Poland has been divided for administrative purposes into 16 voivodeships (provinces), further subdivided into 314 counties (powiats) including cities with county rights, and 2,478 municipalities (gminas).
